The world premiere of the ballet "Kaliopa" has been worked on by its author and conductor Emil Tabakov and the world-famous choreographer Konstantin Uralsky since the beginning of last year. Maestro Tabakov's latest work is dedicated to his hometown Ruse, and its first stage realization becomes a kind of culmination of the 63rd edition of the International Festival "March Music Days" with the full cooperation of the State Opera - Ruse.
The author of the ballet's libretto is Alexander Malchev, a former ballet dancer from the ballet troupe of Ruse State Opera. The scenographer is the Ruse artist Elitsa Georgieva, who is also related to the Ruse ballet, and the author of the extremely attractive costumes is the Ruse artist in the field of stage costume and fashion design Parvoleta Chavdarova-Letitsia. The artistic director of the ballet is Vesela Vasileva, and the concertmaster is Smilyana Lozanova.
The work tells in a new and endlessly charming way one of the most beautiful Rousseau love urban legends - the one about the irresistible beauty Calliope and the governor of the Danube vilayet Midhat Pasha - builder of the European Ruschuk. The libretto also intertwines images from other legendary urban stories from the beginning of the 19th century, such as the image of the genius composer and pianist Ferenc Liszt.
"Several months of serious preparation have passed, and today I am back in this small cozy town, on the banks of the great Danube, in stage work with the ballet troupe. The artists have worked very energetically and share with me the joy of participating in the creation of the world premiere of this difficult performance. I travel a lot around the world, putting on my performances, sharing my art with artists and audiences in Russia, USA, Europe and South America. I love Bulgaria very much! I have many friends and colleagues here. I often come to rest, see them and enjoy Bulgarian cuisine. But now, I came here on business. This performance will be my fourth production of a ballet in Bulgarian theaters. Before that, I staged the ballet "Doctor Zhivago" in Varna, "The Nutcracker" in Stara Zagora and "Swan Lake" in Plovdiv. I am a happy choreographer who has created a number of world premieres! Based on my librettos, eight new ballet scores were created, the premieres of which were successfully presented in different countries according to my choreography. "Calliope" will be a new ballet staged by me to a score specially created for the premiere! Recently in Turkey I had the premiere of the two-act ballet "Carmen" to Bizet's music. It was the 50th performance in my career as a choreographer. "Kaliopa" will open the result for a new ten!
