Emil Tabakov

Emil Tabakov is among today's leading Bulgarian conductors and composers, an author of symphonic, vocal-symphonic and chamber music, an artist with international fame and a special contribution to the development of national musical culture. As a world-renowned conductor, Emil Tabakov is one of the greatest ambassadors of Bulgarian culture in the world. He toured alone and with the orchestras he led in almost all European countries, as well as in the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Brazil, South Africa, etc. His distinguished international career highlights his concerts with orchestras such as  the Orchester National de France, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France, the Orchester National D'ile de France, the National Orchestras of Lille, Lorraine, Avignon, Nantes, Cannes, the Symphony Orchestras of the Arena di Verona, the Moscow Radio Orchestra, the New Russia Symphony Orchestra, with the orchestras of Westphalia, Bochum, Seoul, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Monterrey, as well as with the George Enescu Philharmonic - Bucharest, the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra of Istanbul, Borusan Symphony Orchestra - Istanbul, Presidential Symphony Orchestra - Ankara, etc.

He was born in Ruse and graduated from the Secondary Music School "Prof. Veselin Stoyanov" majoring in double bass and the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" in Sofia with three specialties - "conducting" under prof. Vladi Simeonov, "double bass" under prof. Todor Toshev and "composition" under prof. Marin Goleminov. He was the winner of the great "Nikolai Malko" International Conducting Competition in Copenhagen in 1977.

His conducting career began with the Ruse Philharmonic in 1976. From 1979 to 1988, he was the chief artistic director of the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble, which under his leadership gained wide popularity in our country and abroad, realized numerous recordings and highly acclaimed tours all over the world.

Between 1985-2000, Emil Tabakov was at the head of the Sofia Philharmonic, where, thanks to his high class as a conductor and artist, he managed to realize epoch-making recordings for the national musical culture of a number of large-scale symphonic projects, including the integral recording of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, released from the renowned record company Capriccio Delta /Germany/.

From 1994 to 1999, Emil Tabakov was the chief conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic, and from 2002 he headed the Bilkent-Ankara Symphony Orchestra.

In the period 2008 - 2013, Emil Tabakov held the position of chief conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio, and director of the Directorate of Music Production and Compositions of the radio. In 2012, the directorate headed by him received the Grand “Sirak Skitnik” Award of the Bulgarian National Radio for contemporary contribution to the development of Bulgarian culture.

Since 2010, he is the co-founder and permanent conductor of the Ruse Festival Orchestra, composed of different generations of musicians from all over the world, who took their first professional steps at the National School of Arts "Prof. Veselin Stoyanov" - Ruse. With it, he gives annual concerts within the framework of the International March Music Days Festival, and in 2019 he realized the first ever concert of a Bulgarian orchestra in the famous "Atheneum" hall in Bucharest, Romania, which was a great success.

Under his leadership in 2015, the Ruse Festival Orchestra received the high recognition of the audience and the prestigious national award "Musician of the Year" in the Music Project category.

Emil Tabakov's repertoire includes dozens of opera titles and symphonic works from all musical eras, and continues to expand and renew. He realized the first Bulgarian stage production of "Salome" by R. Strauss, which became an event in the capital's musical life. Tabakov has recorded more than 250 symphonic and operatic works on CDs for Balkanton (Bulgaria), Elan (USA), Capriccio Delta (Germany), Mega-Music (Bulgaria), Pentagon (Netherlands), Gega New (Bulgaria), EMI, Naxos and others.

Emil Tabakov is the author of ten symphonies, Concerto for orchestra, instrumental concertos, Requiem in Latin text, chamber and solo works. Most of them were written for the order of international festivals and famous performers. They were released on CD for the recording companies Naxos, Gega New, Balkanton, Toccata Classics. They have been awarded with national awards and are often performed in Bulgaria, Germany, Portugal, USA, Japan, Finland, France, Austria, Turkey, etc.

He is the winner of prestigious national awards in the field of music - "Musician of the Year" of the Bulgarian national radio for 1992, "Man of the Year" of the International Bibliographic Center in Cambridge, one of the 100 best professionals according to the International Bibliographic Center for 2012.

In 2021, he received the most prestigious award from the Ministry of Culture - the Golden Age Award with a necklace.

Since July 2021, he has been Honorary Conductor of the State Opera - Ruse.
