Yasen Teodosiev, horn

Since 1993, Yasen Teodosiev has been the principal horn soloist in the horn section of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has also been the longtime solo horn player for the Symphony Orchestra of the Siena Summer Academy “Chigiana” in Italy and the Sofia Symphony Orchestra, and since 2003, he has been the principal horn of the CLASSIC FM Radio Orchestra. Currently, Yasen Teodosiev serves as principal horn soloist in two additional orchestras — the “GENESIS” Orchestra and the Festival Orchestra of the “March Music Days” International Festival.

Alongside his orchestral work, he performs as a soloist with the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble, Bulgarian National Radio Big Band, Thessaloniki State Philharmonic (Greece), AGBU-Sofia Chamber Orchestra, Plovdiv State Opera Symphony Orchestra, Varna Philharmonic, Shumen Philharmonic, Sliven Symphony Orchestra, Bankya Chamber Orchestra, Gabrovo Chamber Orchestra, Academic Symphony Orchestra, Youth Symphony Orchestra of the National Music Academy “L. Pipkov,” Youth Symphony Orchestra of the National School of Music and Dance Art “D. Petkov,” among others.

He actively performs and records with the Bulgarian National Radio Wind Quintet “The Soloists,” with whom he won the “Crystal Lyre” award (2010) for outstanding achievements in performance. As a chamber musician, Yasen Teodosiev plays in a variety of ensembles at numerous concerts and festivals both in Bulgaria and abroad. On stage, he has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Bozhidar Noev, Plamena Mangova, Alexey Ogrinchuk (principal oboist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra), Pascal Moragues (principal clarinetist of the Orchestre de Paris), Arkadi Shilkloper (world-famous alphorn player), Elmira Darvarova (longtime concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera, New York), Angel Stankov, Yosif Radionov, Anatoli Krastev, Filip Pavlov, Sava Dimitrov, Vangel Tangarov, Borislav Yotsov, Rostislav Yovchev, and many others. Since 2012, he has also been a member of the PILEKADONE Quintet, nominated for the “Crystal Lyre” award in 2013.

Yasen Teodosiev’s dedication to Bulgarian national composers makes him a regular participant in the “New Bulgarian Music” festival, as well as a permanent member of the New Music Ensemble under the direction of Dragomir Yosifov. He has premiered numerous contemporary Bulgarian works, some of which were specially composed and dedicated to him. Several of these pieces have been recorded for Bulgarian National Radio and Bulgarian National Television.

Since 2001, Yasen Teodosiev has combined his artistic career with teaching as an assistant to Prof. Vladislav Grigorov at the National Music Academy “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov.” In 2012, he earned his doctorate at the academy, and since 2013, he has continued his pedagogical work as an associate professor specializing in horn. In 2016, he was elected Head of the Department of Brass and Percussion Instruments, and in 2017, he was appointed full professor of horn. He also teaches “History of the Instrument” at the department.

He has published articles in the magazine “Musical Horizons” and other print media.

Yasen Teodosiev is the author of the book Vladislav Grigorov – Poet of the Horn (ISBN: 978-954-737-916-9), dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the creative work and the 70th birthday of the distinguished horn player and pedagogue Prof. Vladislav Grigorov.
