Nikolai Medvedev graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Music College in Krasnodar and the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow. He specialized with N. Petrov, Dmitri Bashkirov, Vladimir Tropp, Emanuel Krasovsky, Alexander Mndoyants, Jerome Rose, Vladimir Viardo, José Ribera, William Noll, and others. He was a scholarship holder of the Alexander Glazunov Foundation (Germany), the New Names Foundation, and the Russian Foundation for the Performing Arts. He has also been awarded the prestigious Triumph Youth Award in Russia.

He is the winner of First Prize at the International Piano Competition in memory of Vera Lotar-Shevchenko in Yekaterinburg, Second Prize at the International Vladimir Horowitz Competition in Kyiv, Ukraine (as well as the special Salle Cortot Prize), Second Prize at the Campillos International Piano Competition in Spain, and Third Prize at the Pancho Vladigerov Competition in Shumen, Bulgaria. He was also a semifinalist at the 15th International Tchaikovsky Competition.

From 2014 to 2022, he was a member of the piano faculty at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, where he taught solo piano and chamber music. He has toured in Ukraine, France, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Norway, South Africa, the United States, and China. He has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Klaus Mäkelä, Paolo Bartolomeoli, William Noll, Murad Annamamedov, Vladimir Ponkin, and Evgeny Bushkov, among others. He has partnered with soloists in productions at the Royal Opera, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, Deutsche Oper, the Bavarian State Opera, the Zurich Opera, and other major venues.

In 2022, he moved to Berlin for political and personal reasons. Since then, he has expanded his presence on the European concert stage with appearances at the Konzerthaus Berlin, Brucknerhaus (Linz), the Bogotá Philharmonic, and at festivals in Palermo, the Rachmaninoff Festival in Colombia, and other international forums.

A distinctive element of his artistic profile is the music of Nikolai Kapustin. In 2026, the album Fusions will be released by SOMM Recordings, featuring works by Kapustin and Gershwin/Wild.

Alongside his concert career, Medvedev regularly takes part in socially oriented artistic and community initiatives.
