Martin Tzonev

Martin Tsonev is a Bulgarian artist with a 27-year global career. Born in Ruse, graduated from the National School of Arts "Prof. Veselin Stoyanov" under Georgi Deliganev and the National Academy of Music in Sofia under B. Karnobatlova. Specializations followed – a scholarship at the University of Graz and the International Opera Studio in Amsterdam. Only 23 years old, a sophomore at the National Academy, Tsonev made his professional debut as Don Basilio on the stage of State Opera Ruse (1996). And at 27, he made his first Verdi's Attila in Rotterdam. He was the only singer for the anniversary "75 years of the National Academy of Music" in the first performance of Alexander Tekeliev's work "Monologue" under the baton of Ivan Vulpe. Next is a recording on the National Radio with I. Marinov in 2000. Martin Tsonev became a soloist of the Vienna Folksoper where he sang in legendary productions (Harry Kupfer) with opera singers (Johan Kowalski) and conductors (Thomas Hengelbrock) and many others. Since 2003, he has been a soloist at Bonn’s Opera, where he builds an impressive repertoire, from the pre-classics through the classics and romanticism, to modern opera titles.

He also sang at the National Opera in Amsterdam (with Robert Lloyd, Pierre Audi, Philippe Rousseau), the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and on the concert stage in numerous masses, oratorios and requiems. With the orchestras "Netherlands Blazer Ensemble", "Combatimento Consort", "Netherlands Ballet Orchestra", Philharmonia Amsterdam, etc. He recorded and performed in the super productions of the Arena "Opera in Ahoy" Rotterdam, "Troubadour", "Nabucco" (with Olga Romanco, Elisabetta Fiorillo, Ignacio Encinas,). In 2006, he was personally invited by the legendary tenor Luigi Alva for the role of Don Juan in the national opera of Peru. He was a frequent guest at the Berlioz Opera, Montpellier and the Pleyel Hall in Paris as Mephistopheles, Ramphis, etc. Recorded Phaedra, Pizzetti for Radio France. He sang Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Opéra Nice. The Spanish audience in the Asturias autonomous community very much enjoys the Bulgarian bass in his roles of Sparafucile, Don Juan, Verdi's "Requiem".

To this day, Martin Tsonev is a guest in many European opera houses and festivals. In 2010, he sang at the legendary Salzburg Festival "Lulu" by A. Berg with the Vienna Philharmonic and director V. Nemirova, conductor Mark Albrecht, together with Patricia Pettibon, Franz Grundheber and others. On the stage of March Music Days IF, Martin Tsonev has performed with the Sofia Soloists and as Don Giovanni in Mozart's Don Giovanni. And in 2012 he performed for the first time in Bulgaria "Concert Arias for Bass and Orchestra" by Mozart with the Ruse Philharmonic. On the stage of the National Opera in Sofia, Tsonev made his debut as Wotan in Wagner's Rhine Gold. Director Plamen Kartalov and conductor Pavel Balev. Next came "The Valkyrie" and in 2012 "Siegfried". This was followed by invitations and performances for "The Ring of the Nibelungen" in Riga, Füssen, Nuremberg and Rome (with Kirill Petrenko) and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow with Sofia Opera and Ballet. His Wotan, in this first Wagner Tetralogy in the history of the Balkan Peninsula, was greeted with delight by the Bulgarian public as well as the Italian and German specialized press. Numerous invitations from the national opera followed - first performance for Bulgaria of Opera Gand by Meyerber "Robert the Devil" (Bertram), Attila in "Scene of the Ages" by Tsarevets, Boris in "Boris Godunov" in Sofia, etc.

He is the winner of the first prize at the "Tsvetana Djakovic" chamber music competition. Audience Awards from A.I.M.S Dallas Graz and Belvedere Vienna. In 2012, he won the German ECHO Classic Award for the recording of the opera "Ireloe" by F. Schrecker together with the "Beethoven Orchestra". He was nominated three times by the German Music Critics for Best Opera Artist for his role as Leporello in Don Giovanni. Nominated for the Golden Faust Award along with D. Hilsdorff's staging of Handel's Jephthah. There are numerous articles in "Opernglas" "Opernwelt" "L'Opera" "L'europeo", Frankfurter Rundschau, Kölnerrundschau etc. Broadcasts and personal portraits on BNT, BTV, TV7, ORF, NRD, Mezzo, etc.
