The pianist Lyudmil Angelov was born in Varna and graduated from the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov ”in Sofia. His teachers are Victoria Spasova, Lyudmila Stoyanova, and the phenomenal pianist and pedagogue Konstantin Stankovic. He has won prizes from the competitions "Fr. Chopin ”in Poland, Palm Beach International Competition (USA), Piano Masters in Monte Carlo, and World Piano Masters Tour (France).
Popular on five continents, Lyudmil Angelov has given recitals, concerts with chamber music and has been a soloist in renowned orchestras, under the baton of world-renowned conductors. He has played at the Berlin Philharmonic, the Musicfair in Vienna, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Salle Plaiel and Gavo in Paris, the Lincoln Center in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Hercules in Munich, BOZAR in Brussels, KKL in Lucerne, the Monte Carlo Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Moscow Conservatory Hall, the National Philharmonic and the National Opera in Warsaw, KBS in Seoul and many more.
He has recorded for RCA, Gega New, Pentatone, Danacord, Non-Profit Music, Toccata Classics, Hyperion, Vela Records, and Virginia Records. His CD with Ronda and Chopin Variations was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Chopin by the National Chopin Institute in Warsaw. In 2016, the British company Hyperion released the recording premiere of the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra Op. 3 by Moritz Moszkowski, recorded by the pianist with the Glasgow Air Force Orchestra.
Ludmil Angelov is recognized as one of the great contemporary interpreters of Chopin. In the 1987/1988 season, he presented all of the composer's solo piano works in a cycle of twelve recitals. For this unique event, he received the Young Musician of the Year award in Bulgaria. He is a frequent guest at the most famous Chopin festivals, including the Chopin Festival and his Europe in Warsaw. In 1999 he performed with great success Integrala with music by Chopin in Madrid and other cities in Spain. Ten years later, the pianist again presented the Chopin integral in Bulgaria and Spain.
In 2011 he founded the Piano Extravaganza Foundation, which became the organizer and producer of the annual International Piano Extravaganza International Music Festival, dedicated to rarely performed works from the piano repertoire.
Lyudmil Angelov actively performs in creative tandem with the violinist Vesko Eshkenazi. In 2006 the two performed an integral performance of Mozart's sonatas for piano and violin in Gijón, Toledo, and Madrid, and in 2016 they participated with great success in the "European Music Festival" in Sofia, celebrating 20 years of joint stage performance with the project "Tango".
Lyudmil Angelov is the winner of the Apollon Toxophoros Award of the Apollonia Foundation and is a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Toledo. In November 2011 he was awarded the Gloria Artis Medal by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland for his contribution to the promotion of Polish music around the world, and in 2015 he was awarded the Grand Prize of the City of Varna for his overall work. Since the 2011/2012 season, he has been teaching as an honorary professor at the New Bulgarian University, where he annually gives a large master class. He was invited to be a jury member at international competitions, including “Fr. Chopin ”in Warsaw in 2010, 2015, and 2020.
In 2023, the famous pianist started a cycle of three chamber concerts in the capital under the title "Ludmil Angelov and friends". In them, he collaborates with the outstanding interpreter of baroque and pre-classical music - the mezzo-soprano from Switzerland Marie-Claude Chapuis, the Turkish tenor Bülent Bezdüz, winner of the "Grammy" award, as well as the world-renowned Bulgarian opera primas Alexandrina Pendachanska and Krasimira Stoyanova.
