Ivan Stoyanov, bass guitar

Ivan Stoyanov was born in Burgas, Bulgaria. He graduated from the Burgas School of Music in 1990 with a major in trumpet, while also studying guitar and bass guitar in parallel. In 1998, he earned a master’s degree in both Pop and Jazz Bass Guitar and Pop and Jazz Guitar from the National Music Academy “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia.

In his hometown, he worked with the ensemble “Goresht Pjasak” (Hot Sand) under the direction of Stefan Diomov. He participated as instrumentalist and arranger in the recordings of albums by "Familia Tonika." He received an award at the first annual “Hit Minus 1” competition for young performers, broadcast by Bulgarian National Television (BNT).

Together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tsvetan Nedialkov (guitar) and Kristian Iliev (piano), he founded the group “Bell’s,” with which he toured across Bulgaria and performed in some of Sofia’s most iconic jazz and rock clubs, such as Funkis Pub, Swingin’ Hall, and Mister Punch.

As an instrumentalist, he was part of one of the best-known and respected ensembles of the time—Dynamite Brass Band, conducted by Georgi Borisov. With this band, he appeared in 150 television episodes of “Kak shte gi stignem” (How Will We Catch Up) on BNT, hosted by Todor Kolev, recorded four studio albums, and performed with some of Bulgaria’s top artists—Vasil Petrov, Orlin Goranov, Neli Rangelova, Yildiz Ibrahimova, Margarita Hranova, Biser Kirov, among others.

Ivan Stoyanov is also active as a guitarist, singer, and arranger in various projects and has participated in jazz festivals, television programs, and dozens of studio recordings with the Bulgarian National Radio Big Band under conductors Willy Kazassian, Yanko Miladinov, and Alexander Brazitsov.

Since 2004, as a faculty member at the Department of Pop and Jazz Art at the National Music Academy, Ivan Stoyanov has dedicated himself to meeting the needs and interests of young musicians—students specializing in Pop and Jazz Bass Guitar. His teaching aims to deepen their technical and stylistic knowledge of the bass guitar and help them find answers to various questions in the field of pop, jazz, and rock music.

He places strong emphasis on technical mastery, the renewal of expressive tools, and discovering the most authentic interpretive approach to each musical work. His participation in concerts with ensembles such as the Filip Kutev National Folklore Ensemble, Eva Quartet, the Orphicus bagpipe group, Sofia Orthodox Choir, and Vocal Ensemble Fortissimo, demonstrates the wide range and complexity of the music he performs. These collaborations demand both emotional intensity and a deep level of musical maturity, achievable only by a performer with extensive stage experience.

His ability to musically and stylistically interpret well-known works while remaining true to the composer’s intent reflects the scope and evolution of performing arts in Bulgarian popular music. Pedagogy is a vital part of his identity as a versatile musician. His performance experience enriches his teaching of pop and jazz bass guitar and allows him to pass on positive traditions in Bulgarian popular music while helping each student discover their individual expression and develop their unique musical strengths.

His work consistently generates interest in the bass guitar among young musicians and enhances their appreciation of the specifics of genre-based music. Leading masterclasses across the country reveals yet another facet of Ivan Stoyanov’s musical activities. Due to his proven contributions as an educator, he is regularly invited to conduct masterclasses nationwide.
