Hristo Yotsov was born in Sofia into a family of musicians. He graduated from a music school and academy in the percussion class of Prof. Dobri Paliev. He completed his military service (1979–81) in the Ensemble of the Construction Troops, where he played in the wind orchestra. There he also made his first attempts as an arranger.
Since 1982, he has played with various jazz groups in Bulgaria and Europe. With “Acoustic Version” he won the two most prestigious European jazz awards — in 1985 in Belgium and in 1986 in Germany. From 1982 to 1989, he was the drummer and arranger of the Big Band of Bulgarian National Radio. Since 1989, he has been teaching percussion in the “Pop and Jazz” department at the National Music Academy, where he is a professor.
He has performed with Simeon Shterev, Milcho Leviev, Yulduz Ibrahimova, Teodosii Spasov, Mario Stanchev, Tommy Smith, Andy Scofield, Adam Pieronczyk, Eric Pro, Steve Hamilton, Tim Garland, Alexia, Reggie Workman, Benny Maupin, Steve Sledge, Tom Harrell, and many others.
Currently, he is one of the most active and creative musicians on the Bulgarian jazz scene and a driving force behind many projects. A characteristic feature of his work as an instrumentalist and educator is his engagement with young musicians. He is the author of music and arrangements for jazz ensembles, big bands, symphonic, film, and theater music, including the program The Beginning for clarinet, percussion, and chamber orchestra (1998); Clarinet Concerto and symphony orchestra (2002, recorded with the BNR Symphony Orchestra); Oboe Concerto and symphony orchestra (2003, commissioned by the French oboist David Walter, published by “Bilado,” Paris, recorded with BNR Symphony Orchestra); Marimba Concerto and symphony orchestra (2004 — 1st prize at the IV International Competition for New Symphonic Works in Irregular Rhythms in Plovdiv, recorded with BNR Symphony Orchestra); Piano Concerto and symphony orchestra The Spirit of Jazz (2013); Musical Moments for two pianos and percussion instruments (2007); and pieces for clarinet and piano (2006, published by “Emerson,” London).
Since 1995, he has mainly performed in his own projects involving Bulgarian and foreign musicians, for which he creates original music. He has released over 30 albums on Bulgarian and international labels.
