AndreJ Jonita, cello

Andrei Ioniță was born in Bucharest in 1994. He initially studied with Ani-Marie Paladi, and later with Prof. Jens Peter Maintz at the University of the Arts in Berlin. In 2015, he won the gold medal at the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition. He is also a laureate of the ARD, Khachaturian, and Feuermann competitions. From 2016 to 2018, the BBC in London named him a New Generation Artist, which helped establish his reputation in the United Kingdom. This led to performances with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has collaborated with numerous European orchestras, including the Munich Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Nuremberg Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, and many others.

His musical talent has taken him on tour in the United States, where he has performed with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, San Diego, and Grand Rapids. He has worked under the baton of renowned conductors such as Lawrence Foster, Herbert Blomstedt, Paavo Järvi, Cristian Măcelaru, Joana Mallwitz, Sylvain Cambreling, Kent Nagano, Michael Sanderling, Sascha Goetzel, and Jonathan Bloxham.

Andrei Ioniță is a highly sought-after chamber music partner. He has performed with Martha Argerich, Christian Tetzlaff, Sergei Babayan, Steven Isserlis, and many others. He frequently appears in world-renowned concert halls and festivals, about which he says that the music flowing towards the audience enchants and speaks directly to the soul.

The 2024/2025 season marks major performances with the Symphony Orchestra of Spanish Radio and Television (RTVE), the Saarland State Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under Ruth Reinhardt; the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc; the BBC Philharmonic with conductor Ben Gernon; the State Symphony Orchestra of Antalya with conductor Marzena Diakun; and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra with conductor Geoffrey Robson, among others.

As a chamber musician, he is a guest artist-in-residence for several days at the BBC in London in September 2024. In Germany, he performs Beethoven's Septet alongside Franziska Hölscher, Sebastian Manz, Felix Klieser, and other acclaimed musicians in Grünwald, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Düsseldorf, and the Brucknerhaus Linz. He will also return to Bamberg for a second time to perform in a duo with pianist Nathalia Milstein. He has also been invited to perform at the Schleswig-Holstein and Utah festivals.

Andrei Ioniță’s first solo album, Oblique Strategies, features the world premiere of a piece by Brett Dean, as well as works by Bach and Kodály. His interpretation spans a vast range of timbres, registers, and techniques that showcase the qualities of the instrument. These "Oblique Strategies" make music and art shine. Andrei himself notes that an instrument often finds the musician it is meant for. He plays a cello crafted by Filippo Fasser from Brescia, Italy.
