The Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1948 by the famous Bulgarian conductor and composer Konstantin Iliev. From its founding until 1999, the orchestra is an independent cultural organization. Of particular importance in its biography are the realizations of such major music projects as the first in Bulgaria original version of "Matthew Passion" by Bach, the oratorio "Paradise and Perry" by Schumann, the cantatas "Ivan the Terrible" and "Alexander Nevsky" by Prokofiev, Symphony № 13 by Shostakovich, "The Four Seasons" by Haydn, "Song of the Earth" by Mahler, the Bulgarian premieres of works by R. Strauss, Hindemith, Messiaen, Stravinsky, G. Cancelli, R. Shchedrin, Lyutoslavsky, Bernstein, as well as world premieres of works by Bulgarian composers P. Vladigerov, L. Pipkov, K. Iliev, V. Kazandzhiev, K. Kyurkchiiski, E. Tabakov, and others. An exceptional event in the history of the orchestra is his joint work with Dmitry Shostakovich and the author's premiere of his Second Piano Concerto in 1958.
The Bulgarian conductors K. Iliev, E. Karamanov, D. Petkov, S. Popov, I. Temkov, A. Vladigerov, A. Naidenov, E. Tabakov, R. Bayrakov, A. Izmirliev, Ts. Delibozov, G. Dimitrov, as well as a number of guest conductors and soloists such as K. Mazur, C. Zecchi, E. Svetlanov, V. Gergiev, S. Richter, R. Kehrer, I. Oistrakh, L. Kogan, S. Accardo, R. Richie, V. Spivakov, F. Petraki, R. Cohen and others have a significant contribution to the development and growth of the orchestra.
The orchestra is the initiator of important projects for the Bulgarian musical culture, such as the International Festival "March Music Days" and the first in Bulgaria Philharmonic Festival "Winter Music Evenings". The orchestra participates in the international festivals "March Music Days", "Sofia Music Weeks", "Varna Summer", as well as in such major international forums as the Berlin Music Festival and "Siena Music Weeks", where it collaborates with F. Ferrara, K. M. Giulini, G. Rozhdestvensky, K. Richarelli, B. Belkin, Y. Bashmet, and others.
The orchestra has toured in Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Spain, and France. It has recordings in Bulgarian National Radio, Bulgarian National Television and Berlin Radio. It has produced a series of CDs for Forlan, France, and Vienna Modern Masters - Austria.
After the establishment of the Ruse Opera - Philharmonic Society in 1999, the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra successfully performed its new tasks as an opera and symphonic orchestra and maintains a rich opera repertoire with works by Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Bellini, Donizetti, and others. The orchestra participated in the opera festivals in Rhodes (Greece), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Solothurn (Switzerland) and have toured in Germany, Belgium, Spain and Portugal, France and Switzerland.
From 2005 to 2017 the director of Ruse Opera - Philharmonic Society is the conductor Nayden Todorov. Since the summer of 2010, the Company has been transformed into the Ruse State Opera. In 2014 the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra at the Ruse State Opera with Nayden Todorov received the prestigious Crystal Lyre Award for its participation in the 54th Music festival "March Music Days".
Since July 2021 the great Bulgarian conductor Emil Tabakov is appointed as an Honorary conductor of the Ruse State Opera. From 2022, the director of the State Opera - Ruse is the famous Bulgarian bass Plamen Beykov.
