Pavel Balev

Pavel Balev was born in Chirpan in 1970. He graduated from the "Hristina Morfova" music school in Stara Zagora. He made his debut as a conductor when he was eighteen years old. In 1995 he graduated from the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" in the conducting classes of prof. Vasil Kazandzhiev and prof. Georgi Robev. In 1995-1998 he specialized in Weimar, Germany. Since 1995, he has been a participant in the "Conductor's Forum" program of the German Music Council, where he currently leads master classes in conducting, and since 2014 also a conducting class at the University of Music in Mannheim.

He is the winner of the First Prize of the International Competition for Conductors "Karl Maria von Weber" (1996), the First Prize of the National Competition of Higher Music Schools in Germany (1999), the "Herbert von Karajan" Prize, the Representative Prize for Conductors of the City of Bad Homburg (2003).

Pavel Balev led the Chamber Opera in Dresden, he was also the first conductor and music director of the Opera Theaters in Rostock (1999 – 2002) and Halle (2002 – 2008). Since 2007, he has been the chief conductor of the Baden-Baden Philharmonic and the chief artistic director of the "Karl Flesch" International Summer Academy in collaboration with the concertmasters of the Berlin Philharmonic.

He is a guest conductor of the Hamburg Staatsoper, the Komische Oper in Berlin, the Zemperoper in Dresden, the operas in Stuttgart, Leipzig, Hanover, Bremen and more than 40 orchestras in Germany. In 2012, he made his debut at the Zurich Opera, from where he receives annual invitations for various opera and ballet productions until 2021 inclusive. In the 2016/2017 season, he also made his debut at the Vienna State Opera, being invited again for performances in 2018 and 2020.

He has been working for years and in constant collaboration with: the Danish National Radio Orchestra in Copenhagen, the National Academic Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg, the National Opera and Orchestra in Montpellier, the National Orchestra of Singapore, the Limoges Opera, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Slovak National Philharmonic in Bratislava, Staatskapelle - Weimar, Sofia Philharmonic, Orchestra of the City of Caen, North Holland Philharmonic in Groningen, Music College of Winterthur. Pavel Ballev has been a frequent guest of orchestras in the USA.

In the 2020/2021 season, he was invited again as a guest of the Tokyo Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Singapore, the Philharmonic and the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg. He also works with the orchestras of Valencia, Groningen, Cannes, Göttingen, Sofia, Sao Paulo, Limoges, etc.

Pavel Balev performs concerts with world-class artists such as Anne - Sophie Mutter, Edita Gruberova, Thomas Hampson, Krassimira Stoyanova, Veselina Katsarova, Luca Pisaroni, Ramon Vargas, Diana Damrau, Nicola Testé, Piotr Bechala, Anna Netrebko. Krassimira Stoyanova's recitals "Slavic Opera Arias", "Verdi Arias" and "Verismo" under the musical direction of Pavel Ballev received the "International Classical Music Award - 2012", the annual award of the German music critic for 2012, as well as the award of the German Music review for 2014 and 2017.

For his great services to the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, which Pavel Ballev has directed since 2007, the city of Baden-Baden has awarded him the status of "Conductor in Residenz" until 2027.

From 2021, Pavel Ballev holds the post of General Music Director of Theater Nordhausen and Loo-Orchester Sondershausen in Germany. From 2022, he also takes over the musical direction of the Opera in Limoges, France.
